Situated between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Mojave is a 1.6 million-acre park consumed with sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, Joshua tree forests, wildflowers, canyons, and mountains and mesas with long-abandoned mines, homesteads, and rock-walled military outposts. The Mojave, Great Basin and Sonoran, three of the four major North American deserts, are found at here. Visitors can enjoy such activities as hunting, camping, hiking, horseback riding, and backpacking while at the Mojave National Preserve.
Founded in 1881, Calico was a thriving silver mining town due to having the largest silver strike in the entire state. However, in the mid-1890s silver began to lose its value so miners began to leave and soon enough the the town was abandoned. In the 1950s, Walter Knott bought the land and restored five of the original buildings and today visitors can explore this historical and well-preserved ghost town. Take a ride on the Calico-Odessa Railway, a type of train that originally carted silver, and see historical mining practices at Maggie's Mine. Maybe even take a ghost tour and see if there's a more literal reason on why abandoned towns are called "ghost towns."
Helendale, or Silver Lakes, is home to two splendid man-made lakes called North Lake and South Lake. Since their completion in 1969, these two lakes have come lie at the center of various recreational activities, including kayaking, sailing, paddling and horse riding along the shore. The shores of both of these sparkling bodies of water are surrounded by restaurants, hotels, resorts and parks. The tranquil, still waters of these lakes make an especially beautiful sight at sunset, with its beauty drawing in locals and tourists alike.
