»Fitzsimons Golf Course

Although the course has only recently opened to the public, it proudly boasts of a long golfing tradition. Designed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1939, it began with only three sand greens. Later, it became a favorite place among military personnel, including former President Dwight Eisenhower. Now the home of the National Toyota Golf Skills Challenge, the course features a yikes-what-is-this 585-yard, par-five 18th hole with a dogleg to the right and then to the left.

»Springhills Golf Course

Designed by Richard Phelps in 1973, this 5,001-yard course which is laced with troublesome Sand Creek, is one of the more challenging executive courses in Denver. The signature 13th hole is a 529-yard par five bomb, with doglegs and two nasty bunkers. If time is a factor Springhills Golf Course is always a good option.

»Aurora Sports Park

Aurora Sports Park is an important sports facility in Aurora, replete with a series of green fields spread over 220 acres (89.03 hectares) of land. Attracting more than three hundred thousand visitors in a year, this site boasts of 23 fields for playing soccer, 12 fields for softball and baseball practice, four playgrounds, seven shaded picnic spots and five concession areas. It hosts major sporting events, including games such as lacrosse and rugby. The fields can also be reserved for a tournament or private practice.

»Centre Hills Golf Course

Centre Hills Golf Course features a large, lighted driving range as well as putting and chipping greens, making it an ideal place to work out the kinks in the game. Designed by Richard Phelps in 1973, the nine-hole, par three course actually offers some tough golf challenges, including a 200-yard sixth hole with a green surrounded by both water and traps. The course totals 1,305 yards and rates as a perfect introduction for beginners.

»Aurora Hills Golf Course

Designed by Henry Hughes in 1968, this 6,735 yard course is convenient to central Denver. It features enough mature trees, sand traps and bunkers to bring the humble-factor into play and keep you guessing on whether to play it safe or bring out the big sticks. Signature holes include the 545-yard, par-five 10th hole with a dogleg to the right and a water hazard on both the left and right sides of the fairway.

Here is your chance to speed across the raceway to the checkered flag. Experience the thrill of racing on a quarter-mile paved indoor track, complete with hairpin corners and challenging curves. Compete against 10 to 12 other racers at speeds topping 50 mph. The track provides helmets and gives driving instructions and safety rules before each race. Drivers must be 16 years old and 60 inches tall. Group discounts are available.

»City Park

This 314-acre expanse of garden, greenery, fountains, ponds and fine sculpture, located just east of downtown, is home to the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Built in the early 1900s as part of the popular City Beautiful movement, the park served Denverites as a civic refuge and swimming retreat. The lake beach no longer exists, but the historic boathouse, seen on many area postcards, remains. Three playgrounds, picnic tables, tennis courts and a public golf course are all available.

This preserved park features three barns complete with chicken coops and root cellars on 12 acres (4.85 hectares) of land. Children can pan for gold or pick a pumpkin in during the spooky season. Carriage rides are available for the entire family on weekends. The park provides guided tours of the Four Mile House, the oldest standing home in the city.

Designed by Henry Hughes in 1955, the Meadow Hills Golf Course is a popular challenge located east of central Denver. With the elegance of an established country club, the 6,717-yard course features fairways lined with mature trees and large lakes. This par 70 championship course demands accuracy and is unforgiving if you cannot hit the fairways. Its signature hole is a 524-yard, par five with two bunkers surrounding the green.

If you are looking to play golf, and do not have a lot of time to search for a course, this 18-hole gem is convenient to all areas. The course has enough trees and water holes to keep you humble. Reservations can be made five days in advance for residents and three days in advance for non-residents. Call the automated reservation line to ensure your tee time. A driving range is available.
