Arts & Museums
Founded in 1884, Art Gallery of Ballarat is one the important art galleries in town. Apart from the permanent collection, it also hosts events and art shows.
For rural Australia, this gallery tends to surprise and delight its visitors. The beautiful 1930's Art Deco building houses an admirable collection of Australian art and photography. Both major touring shows and exhibitions, as well as smaller regional shows, find their way to the Horsham Regional Art Gallery as a vital stop between major city center galleries and a way to enjoy the city's active artistic community. Aside from the four temporary exhibition spaces, Horsham Gallery houses a formidable collection of over 800 photographic works, as well as the Mack Jost collection of Australian art. Admission is by suggested donation, and gallery members have free access with reciprocal benefits.
Australia's most famous living museum, this award-winning heritage village brings to life the 1850s gold rush era. Horse-drawn carriages transport passengers through gold diggings along the creek, where miners and excited children pan for 'real' gold. There is a replica Chinese miners camp and a dusty main road complete with traditional hotel and shops selling authentic nineteenth century wares. A highlight is the "Blood on the Southern Cross" show depicting the Eureka Stockade rebellion, a short but bloody battle in which 25 miners died fighting for fairer licensing laws.
